U menya ne bilo nastolko odnoznachnoi reaksii - their attittude to women especially in provinces is horrible - and I am very far from being feminist. But did not you notice that porters (actual people who carry heavy suitcases) in the hotels either old women or teenage girls (while man are in the reception, both in riokans and five star hotels in tokyo and kyoto).... ; everywhere you see older man with younger woman (he is 60, she is 40), but not like in japan when he is 70 and she is 12, and it's a norm..... i was in japan a year and a half ago with my boyfriend at that time and we saw the difference of attitude of strangers to him and me..... he was the only one whom people listened, wanted to give directions, or took orders from in the restaurant..... i thought it was very interesting country, and very unique (different very much from other asian places as well), but some things were hard to get used to being brought up with european set of values.
